Sometimes parents, especially for new ones, have problems on how to discipline their children. Some people haven't yet realized, unless they become one, that being a parent means big responsibilites and disciplining a child is one of them. For singles out there who are soon to be parents, and to all parents, here are some tips on how we discipline our children.
Think and be calm before you speak. If you have to count to 10, then do it.
Set the rules first. Your child won't know what he should and shouldn't do if you don't explain things from the beginning.
Make your limits realistic and appropriate for your child's age. You don't expect a two or three-year-old to just to sit still in someone's living room. He will find it boring and instead wants to walk around and check out stuff.
Try to offer your child choices. This way, you set limits but allow your child to choose what should be done.
Make discipline fun, not scary and traumatic. Make a game out of good behavior. You could say "who could pick up toys from the floor fastest?"
Go for positive reinforcements. When your child lies, point out the necessity and advantages of telling the truth. Use the word do rather than don't. Example: "Do tell the truth", and not, "Don't tell a lie.
